Hussain the hero as Cheam are beaten at Croham Road

RYMAN SURREY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE

OLD WHITGIFTIANS vs CHEAM

SATURDAY 31st AUGUST 2013

CHEAM 181 (47.1 overs), OLD WHITGIFTIANS 182-3 (46.4 overs)

OLD WHITGIFTIANS WON BY 7 WICKETS

The Old Whitgiftians produced a clinical performance against Cheam to get 10 points in the penultimate game of the season.

On a perfect day for cricket, Cheam took first use of a good batting track at Croham Road but the OWs made the first breakthrough when Daniel Phillips was caught behind of David Burton without scoring. Bradley Scriven and Michael Burgess added 50 for the 2nd wicket at 5 an over before Scriven was bowled by Harshil Patel for 37.  Danny Miller joined Michael Burgess and the pair continued to score at a good rate, but Burgess was bowled for 37 to leave Cheam 94 for 3 in the 19th over. After this however wickets fell at regular intervals with Patel and Fisher taking another wicket each and Dinesh Yogananthan took a good catch at square leg to dismiss Paul Harrison for 6. Murti Hussain took 2 lbws to take his tally to 42 wickets in the league this season before Burton and Patel returned to take the last 2 wickets. Cheam were bowled out for 181 having lost 8-87 with Max Gardner finishing 29 not out and Harshil Patel pick of the bowlers with figures of 3-25.

The OWs response started well as the 2 openers, David Burton and Murtaza Hussain saw off the opening bowlers taking the score to 59 without loss of 15 overs. Both batsmen played some good aggressive shots including Burton hitting a huge six off Jordan Thomas into the gardens at long on. Burton fell for 32 to a good catch at cover by Max Gardner off Paul Cohen’s leg spin. Cohen and fellow spinner Gardner bowled well in tandem as the pair conceding 58 in their combined 20 overs. The pressure told as Stiddard fell to a good catch at silly point as Aaron Phillips juggled a mistimed drive off Gardner’s bowling for 7. This brought Ali Raja to the crease and he and Hussain added 86 for the 3rd wicket. The pair kept the scoreboard ticking over and batted sensibly to take the OWs to within 22 runs of victory before Ali Raja was bowled by a Leigh Harrison yorker for 40. Mo Raza and Hussain took the OWs over the line to win with 20 balls to spare and 7 wickets remaining. Hussain carried his bat and ended 84 not out off 133 deliveries including 12 fours.

The OWs play Normandy in their last game of the season and will be hoping to finish the season a high with a win.

OW skipper Ali Raja said “It was a fantastic all round performance from the team and it was nice to beat Cheam for the first time in a number of years”.
