2nd XI lose in the last over against Egham

Egham v Old Whitgiftians

The 2nd XI travelled to Egham on Saturday in relaxed mood with the knowledge that notwithstanding the issue of Maori Oxshotts appeal against their penalty points reduction they had won promotion. For Egham it was a different matter they had to force a win to secure promotion.

The Old Whits XI had been weakened following 3 drop outs from the 1st XI since Monday’s selection meeting and one from their own original selection. 4 players were drafted into the XI from the 3’s.  With this in mind Pardeep on winning the toss elected to bat first with the view that he still had a bowling attack that could defend a total and the batting line up was still strong.

Old Whits posted 207 after being dismissed in 49.2 overs. Sujit, Sean and Shaz all played well and managed to all score in the 40’s but none could convert into 50’s. The score was probably a bit below what could’ve been expected but this was due to 2 excellent catches taken to dismiss both Vishal Patel and Pardeep cheaply, without these efforts the opinion was that 250 was a likely par score.

Both openers could’ve been out in the 1st over as ball one somehow missed the stumps after jagging back off a length and ball 3 saw a reckless bit of running but the attempted run out couldn’t be completed as Vishal Khetia threw poorly to the keeper. After this nervous start Egham progress steadily but cautiously and the openers put on 60 in 18 overs, by halfway they were still behind the required run rate as the OW change bowlers strangled the runs. With 15 overs to go the run rate had passed 5 an over and it continued to climb, scoreboard pressure lede to wickets falling, Mahesh engineering 2 stumpings and a run out from his left arm spin. Egham with 3 overs to go required 18 runs but crucially the 5th wicket had put on 70 runs and the opener Wayne Johncock was still at the crease. The 48th over proved crucial as hard hitting Trevor Baldry, with his stand and deliver style, was now at the crease and he threw the bat at every delivery to take 17 from the 8th over of Shaz, 13 off all parts of the bat and 4 byes, Shaz had previously only conceded 14 from 7 overs. The next over was a wicket maiden and saw the dismissal of Johncock for an impressive 88. We entered the last over with the scores level; the ball was thrown to occasional spinner Anderson in the belief that pace off the ball was required, unfortunately the first ball was hooked for 4 runs and Egham had secured victory by 4 wickets with 5 balls to spare.
