MO RAZA HOLDS HIS NERVE AS OW WIN CHEAM THRILLER

10 MAY 2014
CHEAM v OLD WHITGIFTIANS
SURREY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE
Old Whitgiftians 181-4 inns closed (46 overs), Cheam 155-7 (33 overs)
Old Whitgiftians won by 3 runs (D/L method).
Old Whits and Cheam persevered in blustery conditions at Peaches Close on Saturday and following several rain interruptions the OW bowlers held their nerve to record an exciting win by just 3 runs via the Duckworth Lewis method.
Cheam skipper Mike O’Donnell won the toss and invited OW to bat with the hosts new look attack making early inroads as Steel removed Harshil Shah and new recruit Chris Thompson to reduce the visitors to 17-2 after 5 overs. Murti Hussain survived a big lbw shout when on just 6 before Ali Jaffery, who had looked good in making 23, fell lbw to Gardner with OW 51-3 after 13. Mo Raza played well making 21 before the first rain interruption came with OW on 132-4 from 38.5. 4 overs were lost so OW had 7 more overs to post a competitive total and Hussain (58*) and a well constructed 55* from Adam Clarke including 2 sixes in the last over hoisted the score to 181-4 from 46.
Cheam’s revised D/L target was 193 and the hosts lost 2 early wickets as both Dan Kenton and Ramling Kalel bowled tight spells with Kalel bowling 9 overs on the reel to return 1-28. Cheam’s most experienced pair of Adrian Jones and Sandeep Ganguly then played well in tandem and took the score to 59 before OW skipper Luke Fisher took a stunning caught and bowled to remove Ganguly for 13. Jones and Rob Hendry then both fell lbw to Murti Hussain (2-32) before the rain returned to leave Cheam on 96-5 after 26 overs. With a further 13 overs lost the game resumed at 7pm with Cheam set a revised target of a further 63 to win off 7 overs.  By now the bowling and fielding conditions were far from ideal as Mo Raza had his first bowl of the day. Hussain had 2 overs left and Cheam added 22 in the next 3 overs. Marcus Jones hit Raza for a huge 6 to reduce the target to 20 off the last 2 and a dropped catch was the precursor to Davis hitting Dan Kenton for another 6 as 11 came from the penultimate over. With 9 needed from the last, Davis 30 not out and 3 wickets in hand, Cheam were favourites but Raza produced a magnificent last over to concede just 5 singles to see his side home.
