CROHAM ROAD RUN FEST

17 MAY 2014 OLD WHITGIFTIANS v ESHER
SURREY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE
Esher 290-5, OW 239
Esher won by 51 runs
Old Whits and Esher participated in a run fest on an excellent Croham Road wicket on Saturday and it was the visitors who ran out 51 run winners.
OW skipper Luke Fisher won the toss and invited Esher to take first use of the surface in the hope that his bowlers would exploit any moisture following the heavy rains earlier in the week but after the early loss of Franks, bowled by Fisher in the second over, the rest of the Esher top order all cashed in. Hopkinson (45), Hussain (55) and Mason (50) all played well but Ahmed played the innings of the day with  106 from just 89 balls hitting 10 fours and 4 sixes. Debutant Suliman Younas was the pick of the OW bowlers with 2-39.
OW needed a solid start but after 13 overs the innings appeared in tatters with Ali Jaffery, Shan Malik, Murti Hussain and Mo Raza all back in the hutch and the scoreboard reading 37-4. Chris Thompson and Adam Clarke then added 79 before Thompson holed out to the mid wicket boundary for an assured 60. 20 overs remained with OW needing 175 as Rory Caines played a fine innings of 46 in just 35 balls before missing a reverse sweep at 181-6 with 10 overs left. Fisher hit 3 sixes in a quickfire 27 but when Clarke fell lbw to man of the match Ahmed for 77 the game was up for the hosts and Esher won with 3.2 overs to spare. Taylor 2-21 and Ahmed 2-32 were Esher’s most successful bowlers.
