NORMANDY DOMINANT

7 JUNE 2014
NORMANDY v OLD WHITGIFTIANS
SURREY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE
Normandy 241-6 (52 overs), OW 136 ao (43.2 overs)
Normandy won by 105 runs
OW made the long journey to Normandy on Saturday as the league started the 120 over game format and ended up well beaten with the hosts dominant.  Morning rain delayed the start and reduced the match by 12 overs as OW skipper Luke Fisher decided to bowl first and was rewarded as Ramling took the early wicket of Oli Batchelor caught behind by Rory Caines for just 3. Murti Hussain then had Chris Jones caught and bowled for 18 but Normandy suffered no further alarms before lunch was taken at 88-2.
Normandy skipper Howard Grice then took command sharing in two excellent partnerships adding 79 for the 3rd wicket with Ian Prowse, who fell to Nikhil Patel’s spin for 36, and 91 with Nathan Sowter who made an unbeaten 76. Grice was very unlucky not to make a hundred falling for 96 in an excellent knock that included 6 fours and 1 six from 123 balls. Hussain took 3-79 for OW’s before Grice made a very enterprising and early declaration calling a halt after 52 overs at 241-6, leaving his bowlers 58 overs to win the game.
The OW openers operated in contrasting styles with Ali Jaffery’s more expansive approach complemented by the more orthodox technique of Chris Thompson and at tea OW had progressed to 69-0 from 20 overs with few alarms. The Normandy spinners started to make inroads just after tea with Jaffery falling lbw to Jones for 38 and with Pratik Khetia playing himself in patiently and Thompson looking assured had progressed to 105-2 when Thompson was deceived by Venkateswaran to become another lbw victim in the 33rd over having made 58. The rest of the OW batting was made to look very ordinary by Venkateswaran (3-31) and man of the match Sowter who took 5-35 as 8 wickets fell for just 31 in 11 overs to give OW’s plenty to think about for the rest of the campaign.
