Chipstead complete convincing win

OLD WHITGIFTIANS vs CHIPSTEAD, COULSDON AND WALCOUNTIANS

SATURDAY 7 MAY 2016

TRAVELBAG SURREY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE

CHIPSTEAD 244/7

OLD WHITGIFTIANS 170

CHIPSTEAD WON BY 74 RUNS

The Old Whitgiftians started the season with a disappointing loss against Chipstead after a collapse against spin bowling.

Chipstead won the toss and elected to bat on an unusually good pitch for this time of the season. Chipstead captain and opening batsman,  Nick Woods (61) started positively and hit several boundaries in the opening exchanges before Harshil Patel (3-31) bowled Rob Woolley for 4. Woods was joined by Oberoi who together built a platform as they added 119 for the second wicket. Woods fell hitting an easy catch to Luke Fisher at mid-off and and Oberoi was run out shortly afterwards after a mix up with Chipstead’s Sam Chamberlain saw both batsmen ending up at the same end. Chamberlain and Henry Haslam (26) started to build a promising partnership but Haslam top-edged a swipe to cover at the start of the batting powerplay to leave Chipstead 180-4 in the 40th over. Mo Raza (0-37) and Luke Fisher (2-69) applied some further pressure to restrict scoring before Harshil Patel returned and took the wickets of Leigh Padfield and Ben Dombrandt. Chamberlain then hit 20 off the last over to finish 63 not out. Chipstead benefitted from 8 runs in overthrows and 19 runs in wides.

The OWs got off to a flying start and were 40/0 off 7 overs. Leigh Padfield made the first breakthrough when he caught Harshil Shah (25) off his own bowling and then dismissed Joe Murtagh (12) in the same manner a couple of overs later to leave the OWs 63/2 after 12 overs. Chris Thompson (20) holed out to long on off the bowling of Nathan Heal (1-20) to bring Will Page to the crease. Page and Mumtaz Talah, the OWs overseas player, added 48 before Talah was brilliantly caught at slip for 24 off the bowling of Salil Oberoi. Page batted well as he rotated to strike against Chipstead’s spinners as Oberoi and Woods chipped away at the OWs batting – Adam Clarke was adjudged lbw for 8 off Oberoi, Harshil Patel was trapped lbw by Nick Woods without scoring and Pardeep Chatwal was bowled by Oberoi for 8. Page was dismissed lbw by Woods for a run a ball 44 and the OWs inning soon petered out – Luke Fisher edged his first ball to the keeper and Mo Raza was bowled by Oberoi for 7 as the OWs collapsed to 170 all out, having lost 7/58. Salil Oberoi ended up with figures of 5-15 0ff 7.2 overs.

The OWs travel to newly promoted Old Rutlishians next Saturday for their second game of the season.
