Wides and Penalty Runs Cost OW’s at Ruts

Old Whitgiftians 198 all out (46.3 overs)
Old Ruts 199-9 (50 overs)
Old Ruts won by 1 wicket
OW’s slow start to the season continued at Old Ruts on Saturday when a game that they should have won comfortably was lost in a bizarre final over.
The 49th over of Ruts reply finished with the hosts needing 10 to win with 9 wickets down and the incapacitated James Shackleton requiring a runner having earlier injured his back whilst bowling. At this point OR’s were awarded 6 penalty runs by the umpires as OW’s had infringed the over rate regulations and 3 runs were scrambled off Luke Fisher’s first 5 balls. Shackleton missed the last ball with the scores level and a direct hit by OW keeper Talha Mumtaz looked to have salvaged a tie with Ross Trimmings short of his ground and the crease containing Shackleton on his knees, the bails and the flying Trimmings but alas the umpire disagreed to the disbelief of most on the ground amidst much Old Ruts rejoicing!
OW’s will rue not only their slow over rate but also the 25 wides which were to cost them the match. Harshil Patel (3-27), Fisher (1-31) and Daniel Kenton (1-33) all bowled well with Mo Raza (1-53) and Pardeep Chatwal (2-45) the other wicket takers. Ruts skipper Joe Riches played well making 33 before a sharp caught and bowled by Chatwal removed him with Trimmings guiding his side over the line with a very sensible 35 not out from 50 balls.
Earlier OW’s were well set at 107-1 but only Harshil Shah with 34 and Fisher (21) offered any significant support to a fine 80 from Chris Thompson from just 91 balls and OW’s were bowled out for 198 with 3.3 overs unused.
