Clarke’s late hitting sees the OWs home

TRAVELBAG SURREY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE
LEATHERHEAD VS OLD WHITIGFTIANS
SATURDAY 28 MAY 2016
LEATHERHEAD 214/8 (50 overs)
OLD WHITGIFTIANS 215/6 (49.5 overs)

OLD WHITGIFTIANS WON BY 4 WICKETS

Some late hitting from Adam Clarke, Joe Murtagh and Harshil Patel saw the OWs pull off a thrilling win against Leatherhead. Needing 86 off the last 9 overs and seemingly out of the game, Clarke accelerated the scoring rate hitting 7x4s and a six to secure a crucial win.

Earlier, Leatherhead started cautiously and saw off the opening bowlers with few alarms. Adam Dyson brought up his fifty in the 24th over and it looked like the OWs could be chasing over a large target. Dan Kenton was then brought back into the attack and dismissed Dyson and Surrey 2s player Aneesh Kapil with consecutive deliveries. A superb catch from Joe Murtagh at cover dismissed Leatherhead’s skipper, Matt Laidman for 25 and with score at 94/3 the OWs were suddenly back in the game. Wickets fell regularly, including 3 to Luke Fisher (3-45) to leave Leatherhead 139/7 off 40 overs. Jack Baker (52) and Jonathan Tribe (45*) then launched a late charge, including taking 41 runs from the powerplay, to take Leatherhead to a competitive total of 214/8.

The OWs started slowly in pursuit of their target, losing both openers for low scores with Chris Thompson bowled for 9 and Mumtaz Talha adjudged lbw for 24. The OWs were 67/2 off 20 overs and Leatherhead’s Adam Dyson and Andy Baker tied the batsman down – both bowlers conceded 23 from their 10 overs. Crucially, the OWs kept wickets in hand which allowed the late onslaught. 18 runs came off Aneesh Kapil’s 8th over, including an audacious scoop for 4 by Joe Murtagh (56) to start the late charge. Adam Clarke’s mammoth six in the 48th over meant that 21 runs were needed off the last 2 overs. Harshil Patel hit another six off Kapil’s last over followed by Clarke hitting the first two balls of the last over for four to leave the OWs needing 3 off the last 4 balls. 2 runs were scored off the next ball and Clarke scurried a single off penultimate ball to secure the win. Clarke finished 54 not out and Harshil Patel 14 not out.

The OWs return to Croham Road on Saturday to play Banstead in the first timed game of the season – play starts at 11:30am.
