Clarke’s unbeaten 68 sees OWs home

TRAVELBAG SURREY CHYAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE

SATURDAY 4TH JUNE 2016

OLD WHITGIFTIANS VS BANSTEAD

BANSTEAD 148

OLD WHITGIFTIANS 149/6

OLD WHITGIFTIANS WON BY 4 WICKETS

An unbeaten 68 from Adam Clarke and a strong performance from the OWs’s seam bowlers saw the OWs to victory against local rivals Banstead in a low scoring contest.

The OWs chase of 148 started well, with openers Mumtaz Talah (32) and Umer Riaz (14) taking the OWs to 46 without loss before the introduction of Tyler Meyer. Meyer, bowling in tandem with Surrey’s Freddie van den Bergh, took 3 quick wickets when he dismissed both openers and trapped Will Page lbw without scoring. Experienced Chris Thompson departed soon after as he edged a cut to the keeper, again off the bowling of Meyer. This brought Clarke to the crease and he immediately looked to dominate the bowling, hitting Meyer for six on the stroke of tea. Clarke was ably assisted by 16 year-old, 1st XI debutant Jake Scarisbrick, whose 15 crucially blunted the Banstead attack. Clarke continued to attack, including sweeping Meyer through the vacant fine-leg region for 4 and hitting several straight 6s, to keep the score ticking along. Eventually Scarisbrick was caught well by Lancefield at slip off Meyer with the score on 115 – the pair added 61 for the 5th wicket. By this stage Banstead had brought back seam bowler Nathan Ellis, who bowled Harshil Patel for 1 and bowled Clarke off a no-ball. Clarke was also fortunate when he was dropped on the boundary by Neil Baker but the experience pair of Clarke and Shan Malik saw the OWs home in the 53rd over to secure the win.

Earlier, the OWs elected to bowl first and initially the OW bowlers were put to the sword by Tom Lancefield who hit a towering 6 over the clubhouse and put bad deliveries away. Mo Raza bowled Lancefield for 38 which precipitated a small collapse as Banstead slipped from 61/0 to 66/4. Zimbabwean Kieran Geyle and Banstead skipper Dan Newton rebuilt the innings, adding 45 for the 5th wicket. Geyle was then caught low at mid-on by Umer Riaz which triggered another collapse, including the loss of Newton for 40 as Banstead crumbled to 116/8. Nathan Ellis and Connor Cody eked out 29 runs in 14 overs before Ellis was adjudged lbw off Raza for 14 and Cody was caught by Will Page for 18 to bowl Banstead out for 148. Harshil Patel was pick of the bowlers with figures of 4-37 off 19 overs and Mo Raza finished with figures of 4-43 off 16 overs.

The OWs travel to Valley End next week before returning to Croham Road on 18 June to play newly promoted Walton-on-Thames. Both games start at 11:30am.
