Leck sees OWs home

OLD WHITGIFTIANS vs MALDEN WANDERERS

TRAVELBAG SURREY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISON ONE

SATURDAY 25 JUNE 2016

MALDEN WANDERERS 140

OLD WHITGIFTIANS 141/6

OLD WHITGIFTIANS WON BY 4 WICKETS

A disciplined bowling performance and a calm innings from James Leck saw the OWs to their fourth win of the season.

After a rainy week, OWs skipper Mo Raza had no hesitation in putting Malden into bat when he won the toss. Malden’s openers saw off the new ball threat, with Will Sabey looking in imperious form as he hit 12 off one Luke Fisher over. However, tight bowling from Mo Raza and Nikhil Patel and 2 good slip catches from Aman Shinwari saw Malden collapse from 44/0 to 48/6. Alex Redmayne and Giles Puckle started to rebuild, but Redmayne was brilliantly caught at slip off Patel to leave Malden 66/7. Joe Lavender (11) and Puckle rebuilt the innings, either side of lunch, adding 48 for the 8th wicket. Raza summoned Harshil Patel into the attack, and this immediately paid dividends as Lavender was trapped lbw. A further 22 was added by Puckle and Malden’s skipper Michael Cottrell before Harshil Patel bowled Cottrell for 11 and last man Khayyam Shakeel for 3. Puckle scored an important 50 off 120 deliveries to give his side something to defend. Mo Raza ended with figures of 3-20, Nikhil Patel 4-40 and Harshil Patel (3-26).

The OWs started strongly, with Sujit Dadar punishing any poor deliveries. Dadar added 25 with Harshil Shah (13) and 29 with Joe Murtagh (5) before he was trapped lbw straight after tea for 37. Will Page and James Leck steadied the ship and took the OWs past the 100 mark. Page was trapped lbw by Joe Lavender for 23 and was followed soon after by Harshil Patel who was adjudged lbw off the bowling of Puckle for 11. Mo Raza (2*) and Leck (34*) saw the OWs over the line to a 4 wicket win.

The OWs are now 5th in Division One, but are only 4 points off 2nd place. They travel to league leaders Cranleigh next Saturday.
