CRANLEIGH WON BY 68 RUNS

A terrific century from Nick Walker and some superb fast bowling from Will Rollings saw Cranleigh come out on top at the picturesque Cranleigh ground on Cranleigh Common.

After a delayed start due to a wet outfield, the OWs put Cranleigh into bat in a 111 over game. The OWs made early inroads with Harshil Patel dismissing both openers – Harry Schofield was bowled by a ball which is left for 4 and Andrew Hollingsworth was trapped lbw for 12. This brought Nick Walker and Cranleigh skipper Matt Crump to the crease. Walker dominated the bowling hitting 9 sixes and 5 fours in a 91 ball 103. Skipper Mo Raza broke the partnership with the score on 170 when Walker was bowled looking to pull a full ball. Walker and Crump added 144 for the 3rd wicket, 99 of them scored by Walker. There were contributions from the rest of Cranleigh’s middle to lower order but Nikhil Patel’s variations were too much for Cranleigh’s batmen, as he took 5 wickets including Crump for 60. With the score 229/9, the OWs would have hoped to wrap up the innings but Will Rollings then hit several boundaries at the end of the innings to lift Cranleigh to 249/9.

The OWs got off to a steady start, seeing off the bowling of Robbie Montgomery and Rob Proctor, but Mumtaz Talah, who kept wicket after an injury to Will Page, was caught off the bowling of Jonathan Gonszor for 20 on the stroke of tea. The introduction of Will Rollings to the attack after tea contributed to a batting collapse, as he trapped Shaz Rana lbw for 1 and Will Page was bowled for 1. When Adam Clarke was caught at mid-off for 4 off Gonszor, the OWs were left 63/4. Chris Thompson (57) and James Leck (47) rebuilt the innings. Thompson and Leck both hit glorious sixes as the OWs got after the spin of Gonszor and Broughton. Thompson was then run out attempting a second run to fine leg to leave the OWs 129/5. Harshil Patel (18) and Leck continued to look to attack, with Patel hitting two large sixes off the spin of Gonszor. Patel and Leck were both bowled by Rollings on his return to the attack to remove the OWs remaining threat. Mo Raza, Dan Kenton and Pratik Khetia were all dismissed for single figures as the OWs slumped to 181 all out, 16 balls short of a potential draw.

The OWs will hope to bounce back Old Rutlishians who are currently bottom of the division, and have not won since beating the OWs in the second game of the season.
