Talah and Murtagh fifties see the OWs home

OLD WHITGIFTIANS vs OLD RUTLISHIANS

SATURDAY 9 JULY 2016

OLD RUTLISHIANS 188

OLD WHITGIFTIANS 189-5

OLD WHITGIFTIANS WON BY 5 WICKETS

A disciplined bowling display from the OW’s and fifties from Joe Murtagh and Mumtaz Talah saw the OWs convincingly beat Old Rutlishians.

Despite it being a hot, dry day, the OWs put Old Ruts into bat and initially it looked like it could be a long afternoon in the field as Freddie Freeman (17) and Dan Wood (30) started quickly. After several close lbw appeals against both batsmen, Luke Fisher had Freeman lbw while the other opening bowler, Harshil Patel, sent Wood’s middle stump cartwheeling. Thereafter, wickets fell at regular intervals – Josh Price chipped Nikhil Patel’s bowling to Mo Raza at short cover for 9, Mo Raza trapped Rory Pemberton lbw for 9 and Tom Collett was adjudged to be lbw for 5 off the bowling of Harshil Patel. Meanwhile, Old Ruts skipper Joe Riches, looked to hold the innings together, but was then given out lbw, the fourth of the innings for 44 off the bowling of Luke Fisher. The Ruts lower order continued to eek out the runs on offer, adding 55 for the last 4 wickets. Chris Mude scored 21 before he was bowled by Fisher, followed soon after by Henry Peuble for 4, who was Fisher’s fourth victim. Harshil Shah had Sonny Cooper caught at deep midwicket for 11 to leave Ruts 164-9. An entertaining cameo from Alex Barnicott (15) was brought to an end when Richard Woolland was bowled for 13 by Harshil Patel. Fisher ended pick of the bowlers with figures of 4-56, Harshil Patel finished with 3-48.

The OWs, in reply, were initially in trouble when both openers had been dismissed with the score on 7. Joe Murtagh and Mumtaz Talah then added 87 for the 3rd wicket. Talah hit some audacious shots including a six over cover off Sonny Cooper and several fours which were struck ferociously through the covers. Talah was bowled by Barnicott which brought young Amir Raza to the crease. Murtagh continued to accumulate runs before he was caught at mid off looking to take advantage of a full toss bowled by Richard Woolland. Adam Clarke came to the crease with 56 needed and immediately looked to accelerate the chase – he hit 4 fours and 2 sixes in a 31 ball 40. Amir Raza perished for a well made 29 when 4 runs were needed, caught by Cooper off Woolland before Will Page hit the winning runs to win with 9 overs to spare.

The OWs next play Spencer, who are currently 7th in the Division and will hope to win again. Play starts at 11:30am at Croham Road.
